In Loving Memory of Donald Keith McLain
January 16, 1936 – November 18, 2024
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Donald Keith McLain on November 18, 2024, at the
age of 88. Born on January 16, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas, to John Ira McLain (1903–1968)
and Mary Katherine Williams (1912–2000), Donald’s life was marked by brilliance, warmth, and
generosity. He was predeceased by his younger brother, John McLain, and is survived by his
sister, Donna Murphy.
Donald, a long-time resident of Little Neck, was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 60
years, Rose McLain, a cherished father to his daughters, Amy and Jennifer McLain, and a loving
father-in-law to Andrew Couts. He was an extremely proud grandfather to Carly, Jake, Dylan,
Luke, and Hunter, and found immense joy in his role as a great-grandfather to Everleigh and
Landon. He also welcomed Donny Dekenipp, his granddaughter Carly’s husband, into the family
with warmth and affection. His family was his pride and joy, and the lessons he shared in love,
perseverance, and kindness will continue to guide them.
Known for his elegance and wisdom, Donald touched the lives of all who knew him. His
infectious kindness, unmatched generosity, and impeccable sense of style left an indelible mark
on those around him. His friends and family especially enjoyed his passion for astrology,
genealogy, and history, which he shared with enthusiasm and insight. Whether discussing
politics, astrological signs, tracing family lineages, or recounting historical events, Donald
inspired others with his deep knowledge and contagious curiosity.
Donald’s career reflected his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others. He served
in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, contributing to the Office of
Housing, and inspired future generations as an adjunct professor at New York University. His
work was a testament to his intellect and commitment to creating a better world. Donald proudly
served as a reservist in the United States Marine Corps, beginning in February 1956.
Donald was a highly skilled handyman, known for his ability to build, repair, and restore
anything with remarkable craftsmanship. His attention to detail and pride in his work were
evident in every project he undertook. A passionate enthusiast of antique cars, he loved attending
car shows and sharing his appreciation for these classic vehicles. Donald was also a devoted dog
lover, always bringing joy and companionship to those around him. His talents, passions, and
love for life touched many. Donald’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and wisdom. Though he will
be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all
those fortunate enough to have known him.
A private memorial service celebrating his extraordinary life will be held with those closest to
him.
Though he has left this world, Donald’s presence will continue to be felt in every act of kindness,
every word of wisdom, and every moment of love shared by those who carry his memory in their
hearts.
