Dean was born in Brooklyn on December 6, 1938. He lived in Jamaica Estates for 5 years before moving to Great Neck. He went to Lakeville School and Great Neck South High School. After graduating, he enlisted into the Coast Guard Reserve and served for 20 years. He received his Funeral Director’s License from American McAllister Institute and joined the family owned Shaffer Funeral Home in Little Neck, N.Y. Dean met Joan at Zion Episcopal Church and were married there on September 9, 1961. He served on the Vestry of Zion Church and maintained the church records for many years. Dean joined the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company #4 and served for over 58 years. During his time of service, Dean held the positions of Treasurer, Sergeant of Arms, Vice President and President. He was the most devoted husband to Joan, and father to baby Karen(deceased), Alison and Janine. A loving granddad to Lauren Joan, Dean Thomas and Cole Harrison. He always enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law Josh and Tom. They had many laughs together. Dean truly lived every day of his life for his family. He was also well loved by his family, friends and community. Dean gave selflessly to everyone who needed him and will be dearly missed.
