Carlos Benitez left a message on February 10, 2022:
I was a relatively new teacher when Mr. Donald Freeman took over as Principal at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School in the South Bronx. He was the leader of the school from 1999 until 2002. He ended his tenure at the school in 2002 and I decided that I would leave to another school as well.
I knew Mr. Freeman as a fair and respected man who came into the school to help improve it. He didn't see 'school improvement' as personified by a man walking with a 'large 4X4', instead, he came at it with the 'servant leader' approach. It was more important to him to determine: 'How can I (as leader) help bring out the best that you can give our students?'.
Sadly, as life typically does, we never got to reconnect again after 2002. And sadly, I learned of his passing in September of 2019. Nonetheless, I will carry these positive memories of him with me.
Mr. Freeman was featured briefly in one of the films that the school produced in 2001 called 'Fannie Lou Horror' - inspired by the Wes Craven 'Scream' anthology that was popular at the time.
God bless and rest Mr. Freeman's soul.
Sincerely,
Carlos J. Benitez
