Jane Margaret Salchli, LMSW, was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a devoted social worker, and a dear friend to many. From the start—and throughout her life—Jane was a strong, tenacious girl from the Bronx. Born to John and Margaret Blanc (Healy) on April 8, 1938, Jane was a first-generation American on her mother’s side who never lost touch with her roots or her relatives in County Kerry, Ireland. Jane grew up on Leland Avenue with her brother, William, and sister, Elizabeth (Betty). She graduated from Saint Helena High School in 1956 and went on to attend Hunter College in New York City. There, Jane received a BA degree in sociology and statistics, graduating Cum Laude in 1960. In 1981, Jane went on to attend Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, receiving her master’s degree in social work. In 1983, she returned to Hunter College to pursue a diploma in Social Welfare Administration. Jane’s 30-year career in social work was fulfilling and rewarding. She was an outstanding Medicaid Policy Specialist for the New York Regional Office of the Federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Jane worked on some of the most complex public health policy challenges during the 1980s and 1990s, such as the AIDS and substance abuse crises, maternal and child health issues, and the deinstitutionalization of the developmentally disabled and the mentally ill. Jane went on to become the Director of Program and Policy for SKIP of NY, Inc. where she fought for the rights of and advocated for medically fragile and developmentally disabled children and adults. In 1961, Jane married Frederic Salchli, father of her four children: Frederic John Salchli (Elise Mackevich Salchli), Claire Louise Salchli (Lou Papagalis), Jeanne Margaret Salchli (Sean Walsh), and David Arno Salchli (Lorrin O’Neill). She raised her family in Bayside, Queens, and instilled in them her tremendous work ethic, a wicked (sometimes literally) sense of humor, and her great love for education, travel, and life. In September of 2001, Jane married her second husband, Alfred Engeleit. They moved to Douglaston, Queens that same year and traveled the world over the course of their 21-year marriage. They visited Ireland every chance they could. It was home. On November 30, 2021, Jane passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love. She is survived by her husband, Alfred, her children Fred, Claire, Jeanne, and David, her sons-in-laws Louis Papagalis and Sean Walsh, her daughters-in-law, Elise Mackevich Salchli and Lorrin O’Neill Salchli, her nieces Jennifer and Victoria Blanc, Tracy, Jane, and Charlie-Ann Doerr, and her five grandchildren: Candida and Margaret “Daisy” Salchli, Nicholas and Alexander Papagalis and Lucille O’Neill Salchli.
