Kathleen A. McDonough, 84, of New York, NY passed peacefully in her sleep on December 4, 2024. She was born in the Bronx on May 29, 1940 to Anne and Patrick McDonough-Deceased. They were both Irish Immigrants from County Mayo, who later brought and raised their only daughter Kathleen, along with her six brothers to Flushing, NY. She was the third child in the family, with two older brothers: Michael-Deceased (Ann) and Terry-Deceased and four younger brothers: Sean-Deceased (Anne), Kevin (Eileen), Patrick (Margaret) and Thomas-Deceased. The love of family for Kathleen’s parents and siblings over the years extended to her 9 nieces and nephews with care, thoughtfulness and support: Maura, Brian, Mary Ann, Patrick, Michael, Michelle, Christine, Ryan-Deceased and Anne. The kindness was present for her nieces and nephews, spouses and their children, as she made it a priority to share in so many special family occasions.
Growing up in Flushing, Kathleen attended St. Mary Nativity Elementary School, which was affiliated with the family’s local parish. She then moved on to spend her High School Years at Sacred Heart of Mary Academy where she graduated and was a proud Alumnus. She then chose a path to pursue a Secretarial Degree from Grace Institute. This education led to a long and successful career as an Executive Assistant for companies such as West Point Pepperell, Adela Investment Company, Dan River Mills and Metallurg.
Kathleen lived her entire adult life in Manhattan, enjoying many things that city-life had to offer, and shared it with numerous friends. Upon retirement, she added another home at the Essex and Sussex in Spring Lake, NJ. Kathleen divided her time over the past 20 years between the city and the beach. The Essex and Sussex brought great joy to her life with its real sense of community, and the number of friendships it helped create and establish for Kathleen.
Kathleen had many interests and hobbies over the years, including skiing, tennis, golf, reading, shopping, investing, needle-point, short-hand writing and writing letters to relatives still living in Ireland. She even took the time to get her passport from Ireland. In addition, Kathleen was also active in many groups. She was a committed volunteer for years at Mary Manning Walsh Home in NYC, assisting Sr. Michael Mary Campbell. She also belonged to RENEW at St. Francis of Assisi in NYC, The Women’s Club at Spring Lake, the Elks Club, Telemark Ski-Club, Golf at Del Mar, along with participating in a variety of functions at the Essex and Sussex.
Kathleen was a good-hearted person who lived her life with morals and integrity. This way of living was guided by her Catholic Faith, and the Irish Heritage and Traditions Kathleen’s parents helped instill in her. She was also a strong, independent woman who carried herself with class and real sophisticated NYC style. Kathleen was sociable, and an excellent conversationalist who took pride in being well-informed. She also had a great sense of humor, liked a fun time, and truly enjoyed a good laugh.
Kathleen’s strong-will and determination remained with her until her final days, as she was a valiant fighter. Despite the challenges that Kathleen faced during this last part of her journey, she was still able to experience joy and happiness. This was evident to the Calvary Staff, her healthcare team, relatives and friends who witnessed Kathleen smiling, laughing, singing, and praying. Her love for chocolate and ice cream could not be denied, as her eyes lit up at the mention. The compassionate care and support that Calvary Hospital provided, allowed Kathleen to live with dignity until the day God called for her. The memories will be treasured, Rest in Peace as you will be dearly missed Kathleen!
