Mary “Marie” Stock of Little Neck, NY passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026 after a short illness.
She was born at Bronx Maternity Hospital on January14, 1932 to James and Mary Hayes, who had both emigrated from Ireland in the early 1900s. Marie first lived on 138th St. in the South Bronx and then moved to 150th St. She often spoke of her early life with excitement. There was always a story that ended in laughter. She told us they had nothing, but they had everything. It was a full house, usually with someone from Ireland staying with them until they got on their feet. She and her younger sister, Rita, went to grammar school at St. Anselm and graduated from Cathedral High School, of which she was very proud. When she was a young teen, her father, who worked for the MTA was in a serious train accident, losing the use of one leg. Thus, rather than attending college, Marie held down several jobs to help ends meet.
In 1952, while vacationing in the Catskills she met a dashing former Marine named Joe Stock. They fell in love and married on May 1, 1954. Joe then joined the NYC Police Department, where he served as highway patrolman. Marie gave birth to Joseph Jr, James and Michael in rapid succession. Then after a brief interlude Mary and John were born. After raising the five children, she rejoined the work force as a teller at Home Federal Savings Bank and was soon promoted to assistant branch manager. She retired from North Fork Bank in 1998. She was civically active as a member of the Lions Club and worked for years on the Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade Committee.
Marie loved her family dearly. She had a wonderful sense of humor and an easy laugh. She enjoyed Irish music, her condo in Stuart, Florida and trips to any casino. She made friends easily and was blessed with an abundance of them throughout her life.
Of greatest importance to Marie was her faith. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary every day. She kept an active prayer list, continuously adding people, but never removing anyone.
Marie is survived by her son James (Enid), grandson Matthew (Noelle), great grandsons, Warren and Ethan, granddaughter, Ally Pryor (Kara); son Michael (Heather), grandchildren Thomas and Katie; son John (Kelly) and grandchildren John and Ashley. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, her son, Joseph Jr. and daughter, Mary Geralyn.
