It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Noreen Niland, age 73, of Douglas Manor, New York, on October 5, 2024. Noreen was raised in the Bronx. She was a devout Catholic, whose faith shone through her and showered all those she loved. She is survived by her partner of 27 years, Mallory Sweet, and her brothers James and Patrick, and her brother-in-law, Joe. She was affectionately called NanaNor by Mallory’s grandchildren.
Noreen was “the best” of nurses and highly respected for her dedication to nursing and helping others for over 50 years. For most of her career, Noreen worked as a nurse with the FBI. She was a First Responder on 9/11 and it was that selfless act that led to her untimely passing. She suffered a grand mal seizure due to a diagnosis of glioblastoma.
Diagnosis.
Noreen had so many talents that she shared with others. She was gifted with a green thumb and loved creating gardens of beauty around their home. She loved art and travel. She and Mallory collected beautiful pieces from all their extensive travels. Noreen was also a lover of music; there was never a tune she did not dance to on her own or with whoever she brought to the dance floor (as long as she could lead!).
Noreen loved animals and found wonder in them all. She loved and worried about everyone’s pets and treated them all with equal love and kindness. She also loved popping a bottle (or two) of Chardonnay and sipping her way through fun times with friends and family.
Noreen’s friendships were numerous. She texted daily with “the magnificent 7”, seven pals from her grammar school days. Everywhere she went, she made friends, brought people together, and enriched every life she touched.
All of those who had the privilege of knowing Noreen know her greatest asset was her warm, thoughtful, generous, and kind spirit to both friend and stranger. She always went out of her way for others, no matter the need. Noreen’s laugh was infectious, and laughter accompanied every exchange without exception. She enjoyed life to the fullest to her last day.
While Noreen was a friend to all, her friends and family have known such deep love and friendship with her. She will be sorely missed. A light has gone out of this world that will shine endlessly in all our hearts.
