Owen McKenna, 88, of Queens, New York passed away on June 23, 2023.
Owen was the middle son between Charles and Eugene born to Mary and Owen McKenna on August 14, 1934.
He attended St. Bartholomew Grammar School. He graduated from La Salle Academy High School, NYC, in 1952.
Owen served his country with pride and distinction in the Korean War as a Specialist Class Four in the US Army, earning an honorable discharge. After the conflict Owen utilized the GI Bill to obtain his Associates Degree in Accounting.
In 1957 while working part time for the Postal Service, Owen met Maureen O’Dea at her place of work when she broke a rule of proper handling of the mail and he corrected her.
They married in 1959 and spent 64 years together both saying they were in the right. They also went on to raise Daniel, Eileen, Thomas and Robert between Elmhurst and Little Neck.
Owen was a Jack of all trades and worked dozens of jobs throughout his life but in 1959 he joined the FDNY and proudly served the people of the city of New York for 40 years. He volunteered on “the pile” after 911 with other retirees.
Owen also volunteered for many years coaching youth sports. He was a person who anyone and everyone around him could count on.
He is survived by his loving wife, loyal brother and grateful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
